When the world gets nasty and things don’t seem to be going our way, it’s easy to focus on the negative and lose sight of all the good things going on in the world. Often the things that get our panties in a bunch are, as Pascal says, little things. The grocery store was out of our brand of juice, an idiot cut us off in traffic, we forgot an appointment, we have a cold, etc. So sometimes the greatest joy comes from relishing the little things that console us. Here are some of my favorite simple pleasures.
Pop that’s been shoved so far back in the fridge (or kept out in the garage in winter) so that there are ice crystals in it
The nighttime chorus of crickets and frogs in the summer
The crunch of leaves underfoot in the fall
Napping in a sun beam
Warming up with hot chocolate after playtime in the snow
Watching turtles sun themselves on the fallen log in the river
Getting an actual letter in the mail
The smell of fresh cut grass
Homemade chocolate chip cookies when they’re fresh out of the oven and still melty
Falling asleep to a thunderstorm
Finding a fantastic pair of shoes on clearance
Bubble baths
Listening to the Charade soundtrack on vinyl
Readers, what are some of the little things that console you?
