I arrived in Frankfurt in the evening and met Carrie, my best friend from college, at our hotel. Frankfurt does not have as much to offer as other German cities and the only reason we met there is that it’s where Turkmen Air flies. Early the next day we took a train to Munich where we dropped our things off at the hotel before venturing into the Marienplatz.
Here we wandered a bit taking in the exteriors of several old buildings including the glockenspiel of the Rathaus before making our way to the Residenz where the kings of Bavaria kept their art and treasure collections. The photo below shows a reliquary in the Residenz that supposedly houses the skull of John the Baptist.
plan for the next day. There are day tours offered to various places surrounding Munich and we knew we wanted to go to Neuschwanstein Castle, so we planned to wake early and see a couple churches in Munich before joining the tour out to the castle. We also discussed the possibility of going to Salzburg, Austria the day after that.
